I am new to this tribe, though not new to Tribe.net. My name is Sanaa and I am a bellydancer from Massachusetts.

I am sooo happy that I will be able to attend the BOCA fest for the first time this year! Unfortunately I won't be able to stay for entire event, but at least I will be able to take a few workshops and enjoy some of the experience.

I know it is somewhat "Last Minute", but I was wondering if anyone needs or wouldn't mind a roomate for Friday and Saturday night that weekend. Please let me know!

Sadie is known world wide for her awesome drum solo technique and choreographies. She has been featured on many performance and instructional videos displaying her unique skill. In this workshop Sadie will take you through a series of exercises and drills that will break down ther technique and her drum solo secrets like "Pops" and "Locks" to help you develop sharper more defined isolations necessary for fast drum solo choreographies.

Noon: "DIVA WITHIN"
We all have a stage presence. Does yours say what you want it to? Learn how to own your stage and command an audience. There really are tips and techniques for making this possible. Clearly convey your emotions and set a mood, reach your audience, exchange energy, learn about your most powerful tools for accomplishing these tasks…..like your eyes and your body language! Learn how levels, spatial planes and different areas of the body when focalized, automatically set a feeling.

The shimmy is the dancers' fingerprint. No two people will shimmy the same. Are you ready to develop your signature shimmy? This workshop will cover the many variations of shimmies as well as add some exciting layers. It's a great workout and enhances coordination. Shimmy combos or choreography will be taught if time is allotted. Get ready to sweat!

Once you learn how to play with and facilitate the veil, you'll be able to put it all together in a beautiful veil choreography.

Brazilian Samba is one of Sadie and Kaya's most requested classes and workshops. This workshop will break down some of the most popular moves and foot patterns in the Samba noPe`, the soloist dance seen at Rio's Carnaval and in many night clubs in Brazil, as well as many of the traditional Afro-Brazilian movements and add them together in exciting choreography or short combinations. Solo anyone? Help!

Hi all,

I just wondering how you picked out the music for your first solo? My teacher asked me if I wanted to do one at our next event! I was honored that she asked and then surprised that she asked. I didn't think I was that good yet. I declined and I'm doing a duet instead.

I would really like to do one for my husband that has yet to see me dance. Not that he dosen't want to (or support me ) just that his work schedule keeps him from seeing me on the days that we dance. (he works on the weekend) .

Any ideas? Does anyone know any songs that are about Nefertiti?

Time for something new

Alright, it's time to move from a previous discussion and attempt a fresh take on the topic. Let's say someone (say a friend or someone that you've just met online, say) stepped to you and wanted to learn more about bellydance. What would be the first three things you would tell them? I'll start.

1) It's a dance for everyone. And no matter who you are, man or woman, young and not so young, any shape or size, can learn the dance.

2)Check out the music. Listen to the drum because it will tell you want to do and take some time to appreciate it on it's own terms.

3) Dance! Here's the name a of great local teacher, a wonderful video and the date of the next hot hafla (that's a dance party) and get out there and shimmy to your heart's delight!

Available time for me has been limited. It has interfered with my quiet

I work for a National & International Theatrical local that covers the entire musical spectrum such as Broadway shows, Opera, Ballet, Symphony, Movies, and Industrial Shows, dance companies & all other music events. At times, it keeps me on the move.

I also build for a Designer who designs for smaller theater companies in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Denko/And This Is For...

I relocated to the Bay Area from Southern California about six months ago...over the last two years or so I got a chance to meet Raven, Jessica, and Kashmir in person and have them be a part of shows I put on. It was great and opened me up to the beauty of belly dancing before. Since that time I have always wanted to have a belly dancer perform to one of my poems. I think I have the one it is attached titled "And This Is For" if there are any in the east bay that would like to get together and work on it let me know. The other reason for this post since meeting and fellowshipping with these beautiful women some songs I hear differently. When I hear some music I can't help but imagine what it would feel like to hear it and see it performed with belly dancing. There is a song performed by the vocal group "Sweet Honey In The Rock" called "Denko" it comes from Mali in Africa and is sung in the BumBara language. Denko means to have a child and the song tells the story of a woman who wants to have a child and so she and the village prays for her to have a child but then they realize that not only do they have to continue praying when she has the child but prayer must increase for the child to live and prosper. It starts slow in sort of a call and response and then speeds up with the melding of the voices and the use of hand instruements. It is on the live album "Raise Your Voice" by Sweet Honey and is available on their website as well as on Amazon...check it out if you get a chance...Here's the poem

The Performance Showcase is scheduled for Sun. May 27th. Performers have 5 minutes for individuals, 7 minutes for 3 or more dancers in a troupe, 10 minutes for troupe with live musicians. If you need less time that's not a problem. :-)

Black History Month

So the question is : Have you ever had an audience of mostly Black people and you were stunned by their lack of world knowledge?
I did a show several years ago and when talking about belly dance I mentioned Egypt, Morocco, and some Middle Eastern countries as well. One man was stunned to find out, and I kid you not, that Egypt is in Africa. I also mentioned that some of the world's top dancers are what we call older women and not all skinny.
Now to me this is not only a great time to enlighten our own about the world, it's a great time to dispel all the stupid ideas about body sizes and age.After all we have women from Tina T. to Jennifer H. as well as our own wonderful Jessica and Raven.
Your thoughts??

Hot fun in the Summertime

There ain’t nobody like Cory Zamora…..NOBODY. Cory is a well trained and talented dancer with the ability to teach a variety of people and personalities.

I had the great good fortune to dance at one of her shows the last Saturday of August. Saturday evening I had the time of my life dancing and watching some excellent dancing. The other dancers were Cory’s long term students (professional in their own right) Gregory and Lakisha. Although they were trained by Cory they have their own style and discipline, she has taught them to dance their dance. I saw people having fun being comfortable in their own skin and RaqN the Casbah!

This all took place at the Full Circle Brewing Company a big and roomy place, with a cool stage and great sound system. The dressing room area is cool too. Do ya like mead? The Full Circle Brewing Company beside being a micro-brewery offers mead. They are located in Fresno, CA at 620 “F” Street at Ventura in Historic China Town.

Cory’s showcases are not to be missed. They are always the last Sat of the month. In September that will be on the 30th. The doors will open at 7pm the showcase starts at 8:30 and there is a $5 cover charge. There is plenty of parking right out front.

The September 30th show is to the live music of MIRAGE! Mirage is a combination of Armenia/Turkish and Arabic music. The dancers to this wonderful live music will be of course Cory Zamora, Gregory and Jane Gamoian. Oh yeah and bring a hip scarf because Mirage is doing the music for “open dancing”. Did ya ever want to dance to live music…..here is you chance. If I wasn’t out of town I’d be there myself.

just a hello to all nubian divas!

I've had a month quite unbelieveable... I evacuated from Beirut against my will and flew to Egypt for some comfort...

After Cairo, I took off to Upper Egypt alone and have been meeting beautiful experiences. My Nubian falooka captain from Aswan has invited me to his sisters wedding in Esna tomorrow... a two day Nubian ceremonial party which I really look forward to. Its my third wedding this week. I post to my mailing list regularly and will definately blog here my next update entitled "Three Beledi Weddings and a kitten's funeral".

I'm making use of my time here setting up my touring company to bring dancers to Egypt next June to study with Faridah Famhe, Mahmoud Reda, Aida Noor etc and then take a budget manoeuvre up the Nile. I call it Oriental Temple tours.

Meantime I'm getting ready for the Tarab Oriental Festival, Poland. See www.ishtar.moonfruit.com for that and also DVD's I'm selling.

A Fond Farewell to Billy Preston

Hello, sisters!,

I'm new here so warm greetings to you all. Thanks for having me. I was looking around for some soulful people when I stumbled onto Jair's post about Nina Simone (thank you, Jair!) and voila! , here I am. I'm feeling down about losing my brother, Billy P., and I want to get the word out to everyone about his passing. Let's show him some love.

Please join me in wishing a fond "Farewell to the great Billy Preston who passed away yesterday, 6/6/'06, at the age of 59. Often referred to as the "Fifth Beatle" because he played on so many Beatles tracks, he also played with The Stones, The Band and influenced many others. Check out www.billypreston.net. The video clip is cool and there's all kinds of great stuff to google.

I remember watching him on Soul Train as a little girl as he sang his biggest solo hit, "Nothin' From Nothin' Leaves Nothin'", afro swayin', sharp three-piece suit and platforms, big teeth filling the screen, he blew me away. It was the second 45 record my mother bought me. "She Loves You" by the Beatles was the first. I think they each cost a quarter. I played both sides endlessly.

It's really humbling, getting older, seeing the ones who inspired you transition. I hope he has a bad-ass jam session on the other side with George Harrison, Rick James, Muddy Waters and Frank Sinatra. Man!

Egyptologists find goddess, Nubian king statues
CAIRO, January 31 -- Egyptologists have discovered two 3 400-year-old statues of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet and a rare statue depicting a king with Nubian features, an archaeological conservation director said yesterday.

War goddess Sekhmet embodied the cruel powers of the sun, and was also responsible for both curing and causing illness.

The excavation team believe the statues were excavated from elsewhere, then hidden at a temple in Luxor either for later sale or to protect them from robbers.

One of the Sekhmet statues, made of granite and about 150cm high, was holding a symbol representing life and a scroll of papyrus.

"It's extremely beautiful. Only the feet are missing and the base," said Hourig Sourouzian, the German-Armenian director of the international conservation team which found the statues.

The team, working under the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo, found the statues at the temple of 18th-dynasty pharaoh Amenhotep III in Luxor while working on a project to protect the temple from Nile water.

They found only the black diorite bust of the other Sekhmet statue. The bust, about one metre high, suggested the statue was of monumental proportions, Sourouzian said.

They also discovered the red granite head of a statue of a king they believe to be a ruler from the Kushite period, which lasted from 747 to 656 BC. Kush was south of ancient Egypt in Nubia, now mostly part of Sudan.

"As soon as we cleaned it we realised it's a Kushite king with southern features, with full cheeks and very bulging lips...Statues of Kushite kings are extremely rare, especially here in Egypt," Sourouzian said.

None of the statues belonged in the area where they were buried, she said, leading her to believe they were deliberately moved and hidden for later retrieval.
"These were possibly deposited in the first half of the 20th or maybe the 19th century, when agents of collectors were sent here to send back statues," she said, adding that archaeologists may have buried them to keep them from robbers. - Reuters

Who are Your favorite Belly Dance musicians?

One of mine is Phil Thornton in which I'm searching.

He along with Fritz Heede & Micheal Beach (with whom I can find all
over the place) are my three sources for the Best BELLY Dance music
I could or would ever want to hear. That's what I used to use/play
all of the time before I once again (after leaving it for a minute)
am 'back into the Dance'.

This time as many of you know..I have a vested interest beyond the

BOCA Fest 2006 hotel info, etc.

Bellydancers of Color Association (BOCA)

BOCA Fest 2006 is gearing up and quickly approaching.

The BOCA Fest hotel info is now up on the official BOCA site at ww.bellydancersofcolor.org

Last year we were at the Holiday Inn--we outgrew it :-) So this year we are at the Hilton around the corner and 3 blocks down. This new space allows for twice as many vendors, more elbow and dancing room (we were maxed out last year!) and a great vibe. All rooms in the hotel were filled very early so please reserve with the Hilton ASAP to avoid disappointment. Let the Hilton know you are with BOCA for the discounted room rate.

The shows on Sat (instructors) & Sun (open showcase) night will be at the Univeristy of DC's jazzy 900+ seat theatre! The theatre is a few stops away on the same Metro line as the Hilton. Or for those who are driving, UDC has hundreds of FREE covered parking spaces all weekend long for us.

This year's BOCA Fest is going to be off the chain! See you there... with bells on!

As we all know the only thing certain in life is CHANGE; which is where the Nubian Divas are right now.

Our good friend Nefertiti is now a "Historical Founder" of the Nubian Divas.

We gently and lovingly part ways to pursue other goals. We wish Nefertiti the very best in all of her endeavors and encourage everyone to check our pages for Nefertiti's current adventures in teaching and dance.

Ravenmoon and Jessica are still the originators of the Nubian Divas and the current contacts for projects and ventures in teaching and bellydance Diva style.

We wish peace and bright blessings to Nefertiti and great success in her new ventures.
