Alright, it's time to move from a previous discussion and attempt a fresh take on the topic. Let's say someone (say a friend or someone that you've just met online, say) stepped to you and wanted to learn more about bellydance. What would be the first three things you would tell them? I'll start.
1) It's a dance for everyone. And no matter who you are, man or woman, young and not so young, any shape or size, can learn the dance.
2)Check out the music. Listen to the drum because it will tell you want to do and take some time to appreciate it on it's own terms.
3) Dance! Here's the name a of great local teacher, a wonderful video and the date of the next hot hafla (that's a dance party) and get out there and shimmy to your heart's delight!
OK your turn!

1. It's a great workout... Burns 250-300 calories an hour [ www.drcarolle.com/healthy_04.htm ]
2. Bellydance is a stress reliever from the yoga-based warmups to the music and mantras to the healing beat of the drum.
3. With a strong foundation in the basics, there are as many expressions of bellydance as there are bellydancers.
Next diva... :]

Tue, December 4, 2007 - 3:01 PMI would tell them that ...
1. ...dance is a great way to learn about any culture, especially one that has been so maligned and misrepresented in the news and cinema.
2. ...that we all come from the same roots, no matter what our ethnicity or color, and that the music speaks to us if we listen.
3. ...that dancing, in any form, is the most liberating and courageous act.
