Hi all,
I just wondering how you picked out the music for your first solo? My teacher asked me if I wanted to do one at our next event! I was honored that she asked and then surprised that she asked. I didn't think I was that good yet. I declined and I'm doing a duet instead.
I would really like to do one for my husband that has yet to see me dance. Not that he dosen't want to (or support me ) just that his work schedule keeps him from seeing me on the days that we dance. (he works on the weekend) .
Any ideas? Does anyone know any songs that are about Nefertiti?

Re: Solo anyone? Help!
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 5:39 PMHi Lita~
Congrats on your first duet performance! It's good that you took the time to actually think about not being ready to solo - so many people are just so into being seen that they don't worry about what the rest of us WANT to see : ) Good for you for knowing yourself enough, plus there is no rush. This is a great question - I honestly don't remember what my first solo song was the first time I took the stage. I can tell you how I choose my music and how it's evolved since then. As a beginner I tended to stay in the "safe" zone of music, meaning I chose something that we had listened to and practiced extensively in class. My teacher is old school and taught me to love and appreciate musicians like Setrak, Reda Darwish, etc. Now that I'm a more seasoned performer I tend to have a "top 10" going on at all times. These are songs or albums that really inspire me and fuel my imagination, and Im constantly adding to my collection. I'm a purely improvisational dancer, so to me, knowing every nuance of the music really helps me get lost in the emotion of my dance. You can start by listening to a disc for a few days straight and see what calls to you. Or you may already have a song in the back of your mind that you've been thinking of ? I say the more familiar you are with your music, the more you can give to your audience, because you won't be waiting for it to catch up to you - make sense?? It's really important that you find what works for you and go with it. This dance can be such a personal creative expression, really the only thing holding you back is your own imagination. I don't know of any songs specifically about Nefertiti, but there are TONS of cd's out there with very beautiful and creative songs , and Im sure you can find one at least entitled Nefertiti. Dance great!!! and most of all ENJOY!! -

Re: Solo anyone? Help!
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 4:51 PMKashimir thank you so much. This made me feel good about my choice. I'm not not in a rush to do a solo. I want it to feel right when I do it and not look like a floop or mechanical. If you know what I mean. I do have a few songs that bounce in my head that I would like to dance or should I say "create to". I just wanted to know what my sistas out there have done, since you are so far ahead of me. I'm just a babe in the woods as they say. I'll let you know what I finally come up with. -

Re: Solo anyone? Help!
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 5:15 PMLita - I LOVE that you said "create to". It's really what we do when truly let the music take over. I am not so far ahead of you, believe it or not. I still struggle in class, I still get nervous before performing, and I definitely still consider myself a student. The only difference is that I got bit way back in '92 ; )
Please do share how you felt during performance! -

Re: Solo anyone? Help!
Thu, January 24, 2008 - 3:14 PMWell like I said you are way ahead of me. I just started a little over 2 yrs ago. I think that I'm over my jitters, well no not really, but I like dancing in the smaller crowds, they seem to appriciate it more. Also more connection there. I know I'll be learning until I can't do that hip drop without falling or my shimmy only has a shim in it. ;-0)
Thanks ladies!
I'll make sure I post up pictures of our next show -- this weekend. We are doing a tribet to Mahmoud Reda, who was here on his last tour.

Re: Solo anyone? Help!
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 12:52 AMLadies just wanted to let you know the the duet went very well. I remembered everything, but a very small part that would have just been noticeable by those that know the routine. The whole night was great! Even my granddaughter enjoyed it. You can see her in my profile.
It was great and my teacher was all smiles!
